In 1953, Lex Davison, Stan Jones and Tony Gaze, took Australia’s first model Holden sedan, a dark green 48-215 (FX) to the famous Monte Carlo Rally.
That amazing feat and somewhat forgotten story, has been retraced in style by Lex’s son, Richard; V8 superstar Craig Lowndes, and Gary Poole in a exact replica of that 48-215(FX). Sole remaining 1953 driver, Tony Gaze was the official Patron.
The Australian Monte Carlo Project used Nokian Snow Tyres from snowtyres.com.au to help them get through the demanding snow and ice stages. We were also able to help out the support vehicle with a set of Nokians and a Thule Pacific 780 luggage box.
Here’s what Gary Poole from the Monte Carlo Project said about Nokian snow tyres:
“The Australian Monte Carlo Project chose Nokian winter tyres as supplied by snowtyres.com.au in Melbourne.
Our team, Craig Lowndes, Richard Davison and Gary Poole, found the Nokians to provided excellent grip in all weather conditions.
We used two types of Nokian winter tyres in the event, Nokian WRG2 and the studded Nokian Hakka 7. We run with our Nokian WRG2 winter tyres in Targa Adelaide. The performance of the Nokian winter tyres has to be seen to be appreciated.
We found many cars had run off the road in some very snowy conditions, late at night, however, the Nokians fitted to the 1951 car enabled confidence and saw us ‘tooting’ the horn as we passed in the 48-215 (FX)”
